Fliegl Abda Kft. - a success story
In the beginning there are ideas which eventually become innovations; a committed and practical implementation results in benefits for all customers of the Fliegl Group. At the beginning of all ideas and innovations there is one man: Josef Fliegl Senior. With him, Fliegl began its success story in 1975 in the field of mechanical engineering at his parents' farm in Kastl (Bavaria, Germany).
As production grew over time, new land and businesses were needed. First, in 1981, Fliegl GmbH Maschinenbau was founded. This was followed in 1991 by the founding of Fliegl Fahrzeugbau GmbH in Triptis. The 16th of April 1993 finally marked the birth of the plant in Hungary. On this day, Josef Fliegl Senior signed the purchase contract for the factory premises. Originally, a socialist agricultural maintenance company for the farms in the region was established at this which already produced concrete mixers for Fliegl in the 1980s.
Of the former buildings, only three are still preserved. However, since the existing halls were not suitable for production, construction work was started in the same year. A new production hall and a roofed iron warehouse created modern standards for the production of the latest technologies. The product range included cultivators and mixers and was expanded to include various individual components and assemblies. Until 1995, however, these were only prefabricated for the German sister companies. It was not until 1996 that the Hungarian sales division began to build up. Thus, the plant not only served Fliegl in Germany, but also focused on the Hungarian market.
Due to technical progress, the production facilities have been continuously renewed over the years. The production hall was enlarged by a further 12,000 m². A service building and a test centre certified by the International Transport Authority according to ISO 9001 have also been built. In order to provide high quality retail and trading services, the “International Trade Centre” was opened in 2004. To increase product efficiency at the site, three laser cutting machines were put into operation. The factory has also been expanded to include a modern paint shop which has a dip tank and a drying system. In 2013, the Agro-Center Store opened its doors and the spare parts supply could from then on be managed independently.
Following the opening of the Mühldorf plant in 2013 and the construction of the high-bay warehouse there, a decision was made in 2015 to concentrate on the production of finished products in Abda. As a result, component manufacturing for Fliegl Agrartechnik will be reduced. Thus, the Hungarian market and the neighbouring countries of south-eastern Europe can be supplied specifically and the central role of Fliegl Abda Kft. is strengthened. In line with growing demand in neighbouring countries, new investments were made and production capacity increased.
The most impressive investment of all was the construction of the new 29-meter high high-bay warehouse with a pallet and heavy load warehouse racking system from the German manufacturer Jungheinrich. The investment amounted to more than 1.2 billion forints (about 3.9 million euros). The warehouse covers an area of approx. 3,500 m². The so-called storage and retrieval machine, which loads and unloads the material, has been lifted into the finished building. Because of the enormous height, the biggest crane in Hungary was needed to do so.
Since the beginning of 2019, two tube laser cutting machines have been in operation in the factory. Furthermore, a modern powder coating facility was built. In the 1,400 m² powder coating shop mainly sidewalls and smaller parts are painted. An automatic conveyor belt transports the vehicle parts. The components are first placed in a blasting machine and then a special primer is applied to the jet surface in the cabin which facilitates the adhesion of the powder coating on the surface. This is followed by the drying cabin where the paint dries. The cabins are heated with gas burners or hot water. The oven door opens every eleven minutes for a finished product that has been heated to 200 degrees Celsius for a long surface life.
The factory’s originally eight-hectare premises now span 15 hectares, its built-up area almost 40,000 m². From initially 28 employees, 240 are now employed in the Fliegl plant in Hungary.
According to DataHouse's sales figures, Fliegl is the market leader in the Hungarian market for agricultural trailers in the current calendar year.
The future plans of Josef Fliegl jun. envisage a further increase in market share, putting technological development and economic efficiency always first. The next investment is already planned: an expansion of the existing sales centre, the construction of a service centre and an Agro-Center spare parts warehouse. The completion of the next construction project with a total area of 3,600 m² is planned for the summer of 2020.
Abda not only manufactures equipment for the domestic market but also products for many parts of the world, including Russia, Sri Lanka and New Zealand. There is also a product development department in the Hungarian plant. Fliegl engineers use the 3D CAD software to design the latest models and continuously improve existing models.
To date, Abda produces an average of 550 concrete mixers per year. In addition, tippers, tankers, bale transporters and transfer vehicles are produced in the factory. Altogether, Abda produces 1200-1300 trailers per year. At the end of the third quarter of 2019, last year's production volume was reached. We look forward to maintaining this momentum with similar innovations in the future.
